Community Health Nursing

Community
  • a group of people living in a certain area possessing a unique sense of identity and sharing a common culture
Health
  • a dynamic state in the life cycle of an individual, family, or community
  • is a state of complete physical, mental, social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (World Health Organization)
Public Health
  • science and art of preventing diseases, prolonging life, promoting health and efficiency through community organization for:
    • Sanitation and hygiene
    • Health education
    • Organization of medical and nursing services
    • Early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease
Assessment Tools
  1. Initial data base
    • Family structure and characteristics
    • Socio-economic and cultural factors
    • Environmental factors
    • Health and medical history of family members
  2. Family coping index
  3. Typology of nursing problems
Establishing Priorities
  • Scale for ranking family health problems according to priority
  • Four criteria for establishing priorities
  1. Nature of the problem presented – health threat, health deficit, foreseeable crisis
  2. Modifiability of the problem – refers to the probability of success in minimizing, alleviating or totally eradicating the problem through nursing interventions
  3. Preventive potential – refers to the nature and magnitude of future problems that can be minimized or totally prevented if intervention is done on the problem under consideration
  4. Salience – family’s perception of a problem. As a general rule, the family’s concerns and felt needs needs require priority attention
